Halloween has never been my personal favorite holiday, but I love seeing the excitement kids experience as Halloween draws near. Since I know how much students love listening to books about Halloween, I am so excited to share these Halloween comprehension passages with you and your K-5 students.

Focusing on Reading Skills with Halloween Comprehension Passages

You may be realizing that you need to focus on reading skills (which can be done with the help of my Halloween Comprehension Passages)! Now that it’s officially October, and you’ve been in the swing of things for at least a few weeks, if not longer, are you noticing that comprehension is not a strong point for some of your readers? Whether it’s from assessments you’ve done, listening to readers respond aloud to questions during your lessons, or seeing their written responses in journals…it may be standing out to you that some of your readers need extra help with comprehension.

This is totally normal and thankfully something you can address in various settings in your room to help those readers actually understand what they’re reading! You just need to directly help students build their comprehension skills whether in small groups, whole class, or during independent reading!

High Interest Halloween Comprehension Passages Leads to Improved Comprehension

These Halloween Comprehension Passages are not only useful for building comprehension skills. The passages are also enjoyable for students to read! The topics include Halloween parades, trunk or treat, Halloween school parties, haunted houses, decorated homes in the neighborhood, and trick or treating, to name a few. The engaging topics of the Halloween Comprehension Passages are very relatable to elementary students. So while focusing on comprehension isn’t always a favorite activity for readers at school, they will actually enjoy reading these Halloween Comprehension Passages.

Students will be exposed to content specific vocabulary in each of these comprehension passages. The Halloween Comprehension Passages differ for each grade level. The passages become longer and include more challenging words that are appropriate for each grade level, Kindergarten to 5th Grade. While some of the vocabulary words may be challenging for readers to figure out, they will be familiar words. The familiarity of the words and topics of each passage will help students make connections between their own experiences at Halloween.

The bonus of having students make connections to the relatable topics of these passages is that they’re more interested in what they’re reading. As a result of their interest level being increased, they will be more likely to show stronger comprehension. The interesting Halloween topics will actually keep readers’ attention, making them more focused as they read the texts. Having high interest Halloween Comprehension Passages can truly lead to improved comprehension.
