As the fall months are upon us, it’s time to break out your fall reading comprehension passages as part of your daily fluency routine for your 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade students. Since fluency is the bridge between word reading and comprehension, when you focus on fluency, it results in improved comprehension. Which, we know, is a win-win! My brand new 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Fluency Fall Reading Comprehension Passages are set up to provide your students with repeated reading practice for the entire fall season. Let’s talk about why it’s so important to focus on fluency and how you can do so with my fall reading comprehension passages!

A Focus on Comprehension by Way of Fluency

There are several ways you can focus on comprehension in your classroom. One of the less direct ways to focus on comprehension is by way of fluency. When you use fluency as the primary focus, comprehension is just a sneaky indirect focal point. As a reader’s fluency skills improve, their comprehension also makes major improvements. The reason for this is because the brain isn’t working as hard to decode or break down words as a reader’s accurate word reading increases. Then, a direct result of their improved word reading, is their comprehension because the brain can now focus more on the meaning of the words read. This is where my Fall Reading Comprehension passages come in, as they focus on reading fluency skills as well as comprehension.

Oral Reading Fluency Scores

Let’s be real…sometimes listening to students read to you can be a bit…painful? You’re patiently waiting for them to make it through one sentence at a time, wanting to help them, but also encouraging them to use all the strategies they’ve learned to figure out new words.

On the flip side, let’s also talk about how amazing it is to hear a reader reading fluently! Your ears perk up as you hear all the things you’ve been working on come together- and the reading is so pleasant to your ear!

While words per minutes (WPM) or the pace of one’s reading is just one factor of fluency, it is an important piece of reading. This is why we focus on increasing students’ oral reading fluency scores. When they begin to read more accurately at a quicker pace, that is more natural, oral reading fluency (ORF) no longer becomes the fluent reading focus. Instead, the readers are ready for a focus on comprehension.

Why does repeated reading work?

These fall reading comprehension passages are set up for students to work on fluency through repeated readings. Repeated reading is an extremely beneficial way to work on fluency. You can think of it like this- when we practice a skill, it leads to making progress in that focused area. However, if we aren’t given the chance to practice, we aren’t going to improve. Repeated readings added into your daily routine are how you are providing your students with the practice they need. That practice then will lead to the progress you want.
