Guided Reading Toolkits

Guided Reading Student Toolkits

It’s important for students to have their own toolkits to use for Guided Reading groups. This year, you may be sending these toolkits home, for remote learning. Or, you may be providing them to students to use in the classroom, but with social distancing and personal materials, in mind.

Here are a few simple ideas for you to include in student Guided Reading toolkits!

How to Use the Materials in the Toolkits

All these materials will help your students engage in your Guided Reading lessons. The tools will vary slightly based on students’ abilities, but these can all be used virtually, or in person.

  • Students can hold up a whiteboard or the letter tiles in a word to show their understanding of words in the text.
  • Sight word cards are great for daily practice. I love these free ones!
  • Student’s folders or notebooks can include leveled passages and comprehension pages.
  • Crayons and pencils may not be at student’s homes, so it’s important to send these home for comprehension activities.
  • Fun pointers almost always make students excited to read!
  • Highlighters can be used to find words in the text. They can also be used for finding evidence in the text.
  • Highlighter strips can be used to focus in on each line of a text.
  • Magnifying glasses can be used to carefully look at specific words in the text.
  • Post it notes are great motivators for responding to text, or marking up the text.
