5 Tips to Try This Winter to Help Your Students with Fluency
As you consider why you need to implement fluency strategies into your classroom, keep in mind these 5 tips on how you can focus on fluency, daily.
- Model fluent reading during your read aloud.
- Set up a fluency center where readers focus on repeated readings to build fluency skills.
- Allow students to record themselves reading so they can hear areas of fluency they need to improve.
- Progress monitor your students’ fluency.
- Have your students set and track their fluency goals.
These tips are meant to make you feel as though you actually can build fluency practice into your school day. It is absolutely possible and so important that students are given time to practice building their fluent reading skills on a daily basis.
However, I know you don’t have all the time in the world to figure out how to get a center going, or how to track your students’ fluency growth. But I’ve figured that part out for you.

Ditch the Winter Blues Boredom for Readers
One thing I know for sure is that kids get “bored” quickly…but one way we can combat that boredom is with seasonal and holiday themed activities. Switching up the theme is sometimes all the students need to reengage!
For your own sanity, I recommend you keep the format the same of what you’re doing, but just include new materials. This will lead to less time on your part, but also maximize learning and improvement because students aren’t figuring out how to do something all over again. You can do exactly that by using my seasonal fluency passages! If you’ve used any of my fluency passages in the past, you know the format stays the same overall.
My K-5 Winter Fluency Passages follow the same format as usual, too. They just include fun new winter themes for students to relate to as they improve their fluency!
You can also feel good about knowing that even if you have students across the board when it comes to reading abilities, it will not be obvious that one student is doing something above or below another student because of the consistent format across grade levels of these winter fluency passages.
If you’re someone who wants to keep your plans similar all year long so you don’t have to spend a ton of time figuring things out, you’ll love my seasonal fluency passages bundles! Kindergarten-2nd Grade Seasonal Fluency Passages Bundle
Winter Fluency Passages
These Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, 4th Grade, and 5th Grade winter fluency passages allow you to implement Tips 2-5 on the list above. You can set up a fluency center to use all winter long. Students will simply bring their winter fluency passages folder to the center and begin their repeated readings. Once they’ve read their winter fluency passages a few times, you can encourage them to record themselves reading. This can be done on their own device or on any recording equipment you have in your classroom. After recording themselves reading their winter fluency passages aloud, students can identify areas of fluency they need to improve.
The areas of fluency they’ll need to improve may be:
- Accuracy
- Pace
- Expression
- Comprehension
In addition to recording their reading, students can also read one-on-one to you. When they read aloud their winter fluency passages, you can record their errors, self corrections, and overall number of words read on the included tracking pages. You can then discuss how they did with their fluency and figure out the best goal to focus on for their repeated readings. They can then list their fluency goal that they want to improve and track on their winter fluency passages. These passages lend themselves to be used for progress monitoring of your students’ fluency- but with passages they actually enjoy reading!
