The month of December can feel like it moves super quickly, while also feeling like it is dragging out. I know that it can be tough to keep little readers engaged throughout the month. So, I’ve got a freebie for you that will help keep your students excited to read this month! Check out how you can use these free Christmas Reading Passages, below!
Increase Engagement with Christmas Reading Passages
3 Ways to Increase Engagement in December
- Pull out fun Christmas themed pointers or pencils.
- Have students practice writing the words in “snow”.
- Grab your dot markers, and let your students get dabbing!
Mini bottle brush trees make great pointers for the month. Students can choose a little tree and then use it to point to each word in the passage, as they read.
Another fun way to engage all your little readers is with fake snow. You can place it in small photo containers. Students can then write the focus words in the snow after they read each one. You can even let them use the mini bottle brush trees as their tool to write in the snow. This is great additional practice with each word!
The last idea is to use dot markers to dab the focus words they need to find, at the end.

All these passages are made with early readers in mind! They build their confidence as they work on improving their ability to decode words, and read high frequency words.
