Well it really is starting to feel like spring here in Chicago, which is amazing! As a result I’ve been using lots of my spring themed activities with my little friends because it just makes learning so much fun when everything is full of thoughts of spring. My freebie this Friday is also spring themed and I have to say I am so excited that TBA is turning 2 years old because I don’t know about you, but I LOVE TBA! I think it is seriously one of the most amazing blogs out there with so many incredible resources all in one spot.
In addition to the freebie this Friday, I am doing a little giveaway for my Spring Literacy Bundle Pack. We had a lot of fun using some of the activities this week, so I wanted to share the fun with someone else! It’s a very simple giveaway- check out the end of the post for how you can enter to win.
Common Core Alignment:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.2c Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.Rf.1.3a Know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs (two letters that represent one sound).
My little friends have really gotten pretty good at reading words with blends, whether when reading a word by itself or within context in one of our stories. However, I still want to make sure to give them regular practice outside of our story reading to help ensure that they continue to read them without my help. So that is where this freebie comes in….in this activity, students will practice reading words with beginning blends while having a picture clue to assist, then they will use those blends in a little story they create describing a spring day. My freebie goes along well with my Spring Literacy Centers Bundle Pack. We’ve been using this a TON in our classroom this week and I am so happy to see my students successfully completing all the various activities. We haven’t gotten through everything in the pack yet because there is a whole lot in it and still a whole lot of weeks of spring left…but here a few pics to show you just how fun spring can be in literacy centers! 🙂
Our first activity was to compare & contrast winter and spring. We have been working on compare and contrast for awhile now in our reading series and my little friends are doing a great job recognizing when things are similar and different. I started with a read aloud- I did a picture walk of one of our short winter books and then read a short spring book to get their minds thinking about the similarities and differences. We then made a list together on the board of our ideas. My little friends then went to their computers and typed either a list or wrote sentences comparing and contrasting winter and spring. They then drew a picture and put their ideas into sentences.
I have a variety of spring themed graphic organizers in this pack and this is another one included called Tell Us About It. After reading our story in guided reading, the students each filled out this graphic organizer with the characters, setting and important details from the story.
Here are a few of the other literacy centers we did covering a variety of topics: sight word rhymes, digraphs, compound words, syllables, long vowel words and contractions. Each activity has a recording sheet that my little friends completed on the iPad and then a writing extension which they either did on the MacBooks, iPads or the printed out version (I had to do this for a few of course because I wanted to hang up their excellent writing!).

My students did a combination of these activities on our MacBooks or iPads, but all of the centers are printables you can use without any technology too.

Hi Jackie! I'm sure you are doing lots already! Our school is 1:1 so every student has either an iPad or macbook. Our kindergartners all have iPads and the rest of our 1st-5th graders each have MacBooks. Our 1st grade classrooms have 28 students. Since I'm a reading specialist, I have small groups of 3-6 kids at a time and I have a set of 4 iPads for my own use in my room which we use daily in combination with the MacBooks- kinda just depends on the activity- but each student does have a device more or less at all times which makes all these tech ideas much easier to implement! 🙂 Aylin
